Nightmare Alcove
Nightmare Alcove
Cat memorial in a garden shed. Ghibli turned the museum alcove into warm wood and afternoon light — cat bed on a shelf, oxygen tubing with tooth marks, a patio window showing the twenty feet of world the cat explored. Room #666, the gentlest room.
Nightmare Alcove
The smallest alcove in the People wing, and the warmest. A cat bed sits on a low shelf next to a window that opens onto a patio. Coiled on the shelf beside the bed: a length of oxygen tubing with tooth marks in it. This alcove spans three years, the longest personal thread in the archive. Nightmare is not a metaphor, but Evans could never stop seeing one. An indoor cat in a homebound man's apartment. One day he let the cat outside. The cat stayed within twenty feet.
